What is Speed Dating?

The main idea of these mini-dates is musical chairs with chemistry. It combines a glimpse of personality, toothy smiles, visual screening for mutual attraction, and a chance to ask a few questions of each "date." The idea was conceived by Rabbi Yaacov Deyo in Los Angeles in the 1990s and speed dating is now highly fashionable worldwide. It's great fun for a night out, and is relaxed and informal. If you come as a group, it can be a rich source of entertaining gossip afterwards! You'll certainly enjoy it (most people are surprised to discover just how much fun it really is), and with 30 introductions in one night, you could just meet someone really special.

How does it work?

After arriving, and enjoying a drink, everyone receives a name badge, and a list of all the other people with tickboxes.
Everyone sits down in order, men on one side; women on the other.
You have 3 minutes to chat! Try to say something unusual, interesting and exciting.
After 3 minutes, it's time to move on. If you like the person you just met, tick them.
Every so often, we'll stop for a break - time to get another drink, and chat some more.
At the end, hand back the forms. We'll collate them, and we'll send a list to you by email of those whom you mutually ticked.
It's then up to you to arrange to meet up again...
The bar will be available throughout, and there will be plenty of nibbles as well. Have fun!

When and where?

The next Romance.ucam.org Speed Dating event will take place on Monday, 9th June at 8:00 pm in The Cambridge Union Society.

There is a limited number of places in total: 30 males and 30 females. Since we need to match numbers, it's not possible to just turn up on the door: participants need to sign up (and pay) in advance.

N.B. This cost of 4 pounds (free for Union Society members) is mostly for the glass of wine and some tasty nibbles. Of the rest, some of it is to pay for the posters, and a small amount helps cover the running of the site. I am not making any money personally. If only ;-)

Unfortunately, there is no sane way to accommodate mixed straight/gay speed dating. The algorithm for such an event would simply be impossible, so all our speed dating events are for MsF/FsM only. We are very happy to organise an MsM+FsF event, but on the occasions where this has been raised, there has not been sufficient demand.
